Today was the last time all ILC students and parents met for an event before the cohorts go off on their own adventures. Today was the mandatory orientation at Pinole Middle School. We met, or were supposed to meet, in the auditorium of the school at six o'clock. Unfortunately those students and parents who were late suffered the wrath of Mr. Ramsey. (I know I may sound like I am joking or being sarcastic but I'm not.) While waiting for the handful of students who were not yet present Mr. Ramsey explained to all of us the importance of punctuality. I completely agree; not only does punctuality show the ability to follow directions, it is one of the easiest ways to show respect. Although I do sympathize with those students who were called out in front of everyone.
Once everyone, or almost everyone, was present and accounted for, we began. Don and Mr. Ramsey started out by reiterating several expectations they have for the students. Many of these expectations include being time conscious (which includes punctuality) following directions, maintaining communication, and blogging.
At this point the evening's agenda shifted to the specifics of the trips/adventures/life-changing experiences. Don went through all of the different items that we can borrow. We all learned that on the day of our departure our cohort will meet bright and early at El Cerrito High School. Regarding luggage, we are advised to pack only 42 pounds of stuff; this is so that we have space for all of the souvenirs and amazing stuff we will bring back with us.
The cohorts then met with their chaperones. I found this to be the most informative and interesting portion of the evening. Because our chaperone Mrs. L. is not only an ILC veteran but a veteran of the Columbia cohort, she is very insightful. I now feel much more confident in what I plan to pack and what I will expect for our upcoming adventure, especially in the first week. She outlined our first week down to who we will be having meals with. She said we would hit the ground running; it all makes sense now. I believe her.
After meeting with the chaperones, the cohorts and parents met again in the auditorium for closing remarks.
My cohort and I leave for New York in two weeks!!! I can't believe it. Honestly, I'm a little scared but so very excited. I cannot wait!
